Where is Gemini restricted?

Gemini is restricted in 166 of the 195 countries we cover: the United Kingdom, the 30 EEA countries and Australia, which it left in 2026, Canada, which it left in 2024, and 133 countries that are on neither of its lists, from Japan and India to Nigeria.

Gemini does not publish a list of banned countries. It publishes the ones it serves: an areas-of-availability page for spot trading and a perpetuals eligibility list (updated 16 September 2026). A country on neither list is not served, so we record it as restricted. The availability page still names the UK, the EEA states and Australia, but under a notice that every account there closed on 6 April 2026, as Gemini’s closure guide sets out. Canadian accounts closed on 31 December 2024, Decrypt reported; Gemini gave no reason, and OKX had left Canada the year before.

Two restricted countries carry more than Gemini’s silence. Its user agreement bars anyone in or resident of a country under US, UN or UK sanctions, which covers Cuba, Iran and North Korea. In the Philippines, the SEC issued an advisory against Gemini’s derivatives in May 2023, and in December 2025 internet providers blocked gemini.com after a regulator order covering 50 unlicensed platforms, BitPinas found.

Grid of the 166 countries where Gemini is restricted, by cause and by what our geo-access test saw. Left in 2026 (32, the UK, the EEA and Australia): sign-up refused in 30, not tested in 2. Left in 2024 (Canada): sign-up refused. Sanctioned (Cuba, Iran and North Korea): not tested. Never on Gemini’s lists (130): sign-up refused in 10 (Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, China, Japan, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia and United Arab Emirates), form loaded in 1 (Colombia), not tested in 119.

The sign-up page backs the lists up. In every country Gemini left that we reached, and in ten it never served, the form gave way to “Gemini does not currently operate in” that country. The full list, grouped by reason, is below.

Where is Gemini limited?

Gemini is limited in 25 countries, and in each one a product is missing: 16 get spot trading without perpetuals, among them the United States, Mexico and Turkey, 7 get perpetuals without spot, such as South Korea and Switzerland, and in Brazil and New Zealand perpetuals are for institutional clients only.

The split comes from Gemini’s two lists. Fourteen countries are on the perpetuals list, but only five of them are also on the spot list, so the other countries on each list get one product. Prediction markets are not counted as a cut: Gemini’s predictions page says they are for US users only, as stocks and the credit card are.

Three columns for the 25 countries where Gemini is limited. Spot, no perpetuals (16: Bahamas, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Turkey, United States and Uruguay): perpetual futures cut, spot trading on Gemini’s main list still works; our test: form loaded in 5, 11 not tested. Perpetuals only (7: Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam): spot trading cut, perpetuals through ActiveTrader still works; our test: form loaded in 2, sign-up refused in 2, 3 not tested. Institutional perpetuals (2: Brazil and New Zealand): perpetuals for individuals; spot too in new zealand cut, perpetuals for institutions; spot in Brazil still works; our test: form loaded in 2. The territory of Taiwan is also perpetuals-only.

Two of the perpetuals-only countries turned us away. From Switzerland and Indonesia the sign-up page answered that Gemini does not operate there, although both are on the perpetuals list; perpetuals need an ActiveTrader account, so the official list decides the status, and we keep both limited. The territories of Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico get spot only, and Taiwan perpetuals only. The countries and what applies in each are below.

Where is Gemini available?

Gemini is available in 4 of the 195 countries we cover: Argentina, Chile, Singapore and South Africa.

They are on both of Gemini’s lists without a restriction, so customers there can trade spot and perpetuals; Brazil, the fifth country on both lists, is limited because its perpetuals are for institutions only. Singapore also has a company of its own: Gemini Digital Payments Singapore took over local accounts on 2 April 2025 and received its MAS licence as a major payment institution in September 2026.

Four columns for the countries where Gemini is available with both spot trading and perpetuals: Argentina, Chile, Singapore and South Africa. Argentina, Chile and South Africa are on Gemini’s main list and its perpetuals list; Singapore is served by a local company licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Our geo-access test loaded the sign-up form in all four.

Where do Gemini’s visitors come from?

The United States sends close to half of gemini.com’s visits in every estimate we checked, and India is in every top five, although Gemini does not serve it.

Semrush counts 3.78 million visits in September 2026, 45.43% from the United States and 14.22% from Bangladesh. Similarweb’s figures, published monthly by Cryip, give 2.38 million visits in June 2026, with the US at 46.40% and India at 4.35%, and Cryip’s datasets show the UK in the January top five at 2.56%. Similarweb’s own page refused our requests in October, so we use the published figures.

Three ranked bar lists of the top countries visiting gemini.com. Semrush September 2026 (3.78M visits): United States 45.43%, Bangladesh 14.22%, India 3.33%, Brazil 2.44%, United Kingdom 2.24%. Similarweb via Cryip June 2026 (2.38M visits): United States 46.4%, India 4.35%, Indonesia 2.73%, Canada 1.58%, Turkey 1.56%. Similarweb via Cryip January 2026 (2.90M visits): United States 54.14%, India 3.1%, United Kingdom 2.56%, Singapore 1.59%, South Korea 1.55%. The United States, limited for Gemini because perpetuals are cut, leads every list; Bangladesh, India, the UK and Canada, where Gemini is restricted, also appear. The United States bars are cut off at the scale limit.

The UK is in Similarweb’s top five every month from January to May and drops out in June, two months after Gemini closed its accounts there. The restricted countries that remain need a caution: gemini.com shares its name with Google’s Gemini assistant, and Semrush credits 185,000 of the September visits to links from that assistant, so part of the traffic from Bangladesh and India may not be looking for an exchange at all. Estimators model traffic from panels and samples, so treat any single share as an estimate.

Gemini geo-access test: what we saw from 59 places

In our test Gemini’s home page loaded everywhere, but its sign-up page refused us in 43 of the 59 places we reached, with Gemini’s own message that it does not currently operate in that country.

We ran the test ourselves on 16 October 2026, with the same method as for every platform. A browser with a VPN connected to one country at a time and loaded Gemini’s home page and its sign-up page, each time in a fresh private window with no cookies. Cookie banners were hidden but never accepted, and bot checks were waited out, never solved. Every run saved the page text and a screenshot.

All 59 places, 57 of our 195 countries plus Hong Kong and Taiwan, went through VPN servers located in the country. Nigeria and Ukraine returned errors and count as not tested. The refusal appears in place of the sign-up form with a link to pick another country, so it reads the visitor’s location rather than blocking the whole site.

The test does not decide a country’s status on its own: Gemini’s lists come first, and a form that loads is not permission to open an account.

Table of Gemini’s recorded status against what our geo-access test saw on its sign-up page. Restricted (166): sign-up refused in 41, form loaded in 1, not tested in 124. Limited (25): sign-up refused in 2, form loaded in 9, not tested in 14. Available (4): sign-up refused in 0, form loaded in 4, not tested in 0. A refusal is Gemini’s own message that it does not currently operate in the visitor’s country; the home page loaded everywhere.

Three patterns stand out. First, the refusal follows Gemini’s lists closely: 41 of the 42 restricted countries we reached were refused, every one Gemini left included. That is the opposite of Coinbase, which refused nobody by IP in the same kind of test. Second, the exceptions run both ways: Colombia and Hong Kong, on neither list, got the form, while Switzerland and Indonesia, on the perpetuals list, did not. Third, a form that loads proves little where Gemini checks residence at verification, which asks for an ID from your country of residence. Cuba, Iran, North Korea and most of Africa were not tested. The full result for every place is below.

  • "Gemini does not currently operate in your country."

Gemini licences and registrations

Gemini holds 8 licences and registrations in 3 jurisdictions, six of them in the United States, one in Singapore and one MiCA authorisation in Malta that it no longer uses.

Gemini lists its US licences on its licences page and in its Trust Center; we checked the CFTC contract market, the MAS licence and the MiCA entry against the regulators’ own records. Six are licences or charters, one is a registration and one is an authorisation left unused.

Chart of Gemini’s 8 licences and registrations in 3 jurisdictions: 6 licences or charters, 1 registration and 1 authorisation left unused. United States: a New York trust charter and a Nevada trust licence for Gemini Trust Company, state money transmitter licences for the trust company and Gemini Moonbase, a CFTC contract market (Gemini Titan) and clearinghouse (Gemini Olympus), and a FINRA broker-dealer (Gemini Galactic Markets). Singapore: a major payment institution licence from MAS. Malta: a MiCA authorisation for 29 EEA states, unused since Gemini closed every EEA account in April 2026.

United States

  • New York: Gemini Trust Company, LLC is a limited liability trust company chartered by NYDFS in October 2015 (NMLS 1518126). It also holds a Nevada foreign independent trust company licence.
  • State licences: money transmitter licences or their equivalent are held by the trust company and by Gemini Moonbase, LLC (NMLS 2403509), which has served most US customers since a move that began on 21 May 2025.
  • Federal: Gemini Titan, LLC is a CFTC designated contract market for prediction markets (10 December 2025), Gemini Olympus, LLC received a CFTC clearinghouse licence in April 2026, and Gemini Galactic Markets is the FINRA broker-dealer behind US stock trading, according to Gemini’s stocks help page.

Asia-Pacific

  • Singapore: Gemini Digital Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. holds a major payment institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore for digital payment token and cross-border transfer services.

Europe

  • Malta (EEA passport): Gemini Intergalactic EU Ltd was authorised under MiCA by the MFSA on 21 August 2025 (covered in the next section). Its UK companies are being wound down: the FCA said on 6 February 2026 it would work with both firms until their permissions and registration are cancelled.

Gemini and MiCA in the EU

Gemini had a MiCA licence and left anyway: its Maltese company was authorised on 21 August 2025, and less than six months later Gemini announced it was closing every EEA account, which it did on 6 April 2026.

MiCA is the EU’s crypto rulebook, and since 30 December 2024 it has required exchanges serving EU clients to hold an authorisation from one member state (our MiCA article covers the rules). Gemini prepared for it: it removed twelve tokens for EEA customers from 17 June 2025, and ESMA’s register of authorised firms shows Gemini Intergalactic EU Ltd authorised by Malta’s MFSA and passported to 29 EEA states. In the file of 16 October 2026 the entry still has no end date.

Chart of the MiCA status of 14 crypto platforms. Authorised: Bitstamp, Bybit, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Gate, Kraken, KuCoin and OKX. No MiCA licence: Binance, Bitfinex, Bitget and MEXC. Left the EEA: Gemini. Under EU sanctions: HTX. Gemini is highlighted.

Gemini is the one platform in our MiCA dataset that holds an authorisation it does not use. The reason was commercial, not regulatory: announcing the exit on 5 February 2026, the Winklevoss brothers wrote in Gemini 2.0 that Gemini would leave the UK, EU and Australian markets and cut its staff by about a quarter. Unlike Kraken, which serves all 30 EEA countries under an Irish authorisation, Gemini now has no EEA customers.

Gemini MiCA timeline

Timeline of MiCA and Gemini. EU rules: 30 Jun 2024, Stablecoin rules apply; 30 Dec 2024, CASP licensing starts; 1 Jul 2026, Transition ends. Gemini: 30 Dec 2024, EEA Travel Rule: deposit checks; 17 Jun 2025, 12 tokens removed for EEA users; 21 Aug 2025, MiCA licence from the MFSA; 5 Feb 2026, Exit announced; 6 Apr 2026, Every account closed.

The wind-down took two months. New accounts and incentive programmes stopped first, deposits ended on 5 March 2026 in the UK and the EU and on 28 February in Australia, accounts then went withdrawal-only, and Gemini named eToro as the partner for customers moving their assets.

Is Gemini available in the US?

Yes, but limited: spot trading is open in all 50 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, while perpetual futures are closed to anyone in the US and two states lose a product.

Gemini Trust Company keeps customers in New York and Idaho, according to the Moonbase guide, and Gemini Moonbase serves the rest. Gemini’s perpetuals list excludes anyone physically in the US or counted as a US person under CFTC rules. US customers get products the rest of the world does not: prediction markets, stocks and ETFs, margin for eligible traders outside New York, and the Gemini Credit Card.

Where Gemini cuts products by state

Tile map of the United States showing where Gemini cuts a product. Staking through Asset Rewards: not offered in New York. Sports event contracts: stopped in Connecticut after a state cease-and-desist order. Every other state has no cut. Spot trading is open in all 50 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, perpetual futures are closed to anyone in the US, stocks are not yet live in Texas or Guam, and margin trading is closed in New York.

Two state cuts are in our data:

  • New York: Gemini’s Asset Rewards staking (updated 7 October 2026) is not open to New York residents while Gemini talks to NYDFS.
  • Connecticut: after the state’s cease-and-desist orders of September 2026, Gemini stopped offering sports event contracts there, DeFi Rate reported on 8 October, citing CT Insider.

Stock trading is not yet live in Texas or Guam, according to Gemini’s stocks page, which says those launches are coming.

Gemini fines, lawsuits and market moves

Most of Gemini’s US cases came from Earn, the lending programme it ran with Genesis until withdrawals froze in November 2022. The SEC sued both firms in January 2023 and dismissed its case against Gemini with prejudice on 23 January 2026. NYDFS settled first: in February 2024 Gemini agreed to return at least $1.1 billion to Earn customers and pay a $37 million penalty.

A separate CFTC case over statements made in 2017 about a bitcoin futures contract ended in a $5 million settlement in January 2025. In 2026 the CFTC and Gemini asked the court to vacate part of that order, and on 15 October a federal judge refused. Prediction markets brought new cases: New York’s Attorney General sued Gemini and Coinbase in April 2026, calling their markets illegal gambling, and Connecticut ordered Gemini and eight other operators to stop sports contracts in September, WSHU reported.

Year-by-year table of regulator actions against Gemini beside its own moves. 2022: CFTC sues over 2017 futures statements; Earn frozen as Genesis halts withdrawals. 2023: SEC sues Gemini and Genesis over Earn; Philippine SEC advisory on derivatives; New York AG sues over Earn; Gemini Derivatives opens abroad. 2024: NYDFS fine, $37m; $1.1bn back to Earn users; Leaves Canada (31 Dec). 2025: CFTC settlement, $5m; Philippine ISPs block gemini.com; Lists on Nasdaq (Sep); MiCA licence from the MFSA; CFTC contract market for predictions. 2026: SEC drops the Earn case (Jan); New York AG sues over predictions; Connecticut sports contracts order; Court keeps the CFTC order (Oct); Leaves the UK, EEA and Australia; CFTC clearinghouse licence; MAS payment licence.

Gemini KYC and identity verification

Gemini has one level of verification: a government photo ID and a biometric selfie, and an account cannot trade or transfer until both are done; Gemini publishes no tiers, only payment limits.

Gemini’s documents page (updated 23 February 2026) accepts a state ID, driving licence, passport or passport card, or Green Card from US residents, and a passport from the country of citizenship or a national ID or driving licence from the country of residence from everyone else. Its app guide says full trading and transfer capabilities open once verification is complete. US customers also give a Social Security number, which Gemini says it must collect as a New York trust company, and in some countries Gemini asks for source of wealth.

Table of Gemini’s identity verification for US residents and residents elsewhere. Photo ID: a state ID, driving licence, passport or passport card, or Green Card in the US; elsewhere a passport from the country of citizenship, or a national ID or driving licence from the country of residence. Both need a biometric selfie check. US residents give a Social Security number; elsewhere no tax number is stated, but Gemini collects source of wealth where local rules require it. The US state of residence decides which Gemini company serves the account; elsewhere you pick your country of residence, not nationality, and Singapore residents can use MyInfo. Trading and transfers open only after verification, there are no verification tiers, payment limits include $1,000 a day by debit card, and the minimum age is 18.

Limits depend on the payment method, not on a verification level: Gemini’s transfer limits page caps debit card purchases at $1,000 a day and ACH withdrawals at $100,000 a day for US customers. Its onboarding guide asks for the country of residence, not the nationality, and tells applicants to check the list of supported countries first.

Gemini verification history

Since 2023 Gemini has added checks on crypto transfers to meet the Travel Rule, first in the UK and then in the EEA from the end of December 2024 and in Singapore in 2025. Its customers have also changed company twice: Singapore accounts moved to the local company on 2 April 2025, and most US accounts to Gemini Moonbase from 21 May 2025, which needed only acceptance of a new agreement, not new documents.

Timeline of Gemini identity and reporting rules. Rules: Nov 2023, UK Travel Rule checks on transfers; 30 Dec 2024, EEA Travel Rule: deposit attestations; Mar 2025, Singapore Travel Rule; 1 Jan 2026, US 1099-DA forms add cost basis. Account changes: 2 Apr 2025, Singapore accounts move to local company; 21 May 2025, US users move to Gemini Moonbase; 6 Apr 2026, UK, EEA, Australia close.

For how Gemini’s checks compare with other exchanges, see our guide to crypto exchange KYC.

What if Gemini is restricted where you live?

You will probably find another platform: of the 21 others we track, 15 are available in the United Arab Emirates, 11 in Australia, 10 in Germany and India and 8 in France, but only 3 in Canada, one of them a centralised exchange.

A VPN is no route around it. Gemini’s agreement lets it suspend an account accessed from a country it does not serve, verification asks for an ID from your country of residence, and in our test the sign-up page refused visitors from every market Gemini left. What is left is a platform that is allowed to serve you where you live.

Stacked bars for 10 of the 166 countries where Gemini is restricted, the markets it left and the ones that still send it visitors, showing how many of the 21 other platforms we track are available, limited, restricted or not yet verified there, and how many of the available ones are centralised exchanges. Bangladesh:17 available (10 exchanges), 3 limited, 1 restricted, 0 unverified; United Arab Emirates:15 available (10 exchanges), 5 limited, 1 restricted, 0 unverified; Australia:11 available (7 exchanges), 7 limited, 3 restricted, 0 unverified; Germany:10 available (4 exchanges), 8 limited, 3 restricted, 0 unverified; India:10 available (5 exchanges), 6 limited, 5 restricted, 0 unverified; Philippines:10 available (3 exchanges), 9 limited, 2 restricted, 0 unverified; France:8 available (4 exchanges), 7 limited, 6 restricted, 0 unverified; Japan:6 available (1 exchanges), 7 limited, 8 restricted, 0 unverified; United Kingdom:4 available (2 exchanges), 7 limited, 10 restricted, 0 unverified; Canada:3 available (1 exchanges), 6 limited, 12 restricted, 0 unverified.

The chart covers the markets Gemini left and the restricted countries that still send it the most visitors. The UK has four available platforms, two of them centralised exchanges, while Canada has three and Japan six, but only one centralised exchange each. Each country page lists every platform we track there with its status and sources; start from our country index.
