The European Securities and Markets Authority published an opinion on 8 October 2026 on crypto-asset services involving asset-referenced and e-money tokens that do not comply with MiCA. The press page sets out its expectations for firms and national regulators.

What ESMA expects

  • Firms stop services. Authorised crypto-asset service providers should stop providing services related to these stablecoins to EU clients, and have controls that stop clients acquiring or increasing exposure.
  • Regulators act. National authorities should ensure firms do not maintain, introduce or facilitate access to them, and should require existing exposures to be remedied as soon as possible and no later than three months after publication.
  • Narrow exceptions. Any continued service should be limited to liquidation, conversion, withdrawal, transfer or safekeeping, and be time-limited and closely supervised.

What changes in our data

Nothing yet. The opinion is supervisory guidance addressed to firms and regulators, not an access restriction. We will log changes if platforms delist or restrict specific stablecoins for EU users.
